The NHL helmet rack looks nothing like the safety chart
We compared the NHL’s five most-used helmet labels—and ten of 2025–26’s top scorers—with Virginia Tech’s adult ratings. The NHL favourites do not follow the lab ranking, and the gear list cannot tell us why each player chose his helmet.

Walk into a hockey shop and it is easy to build a little safety hierarchy in your head. Newer should be better. More expensive should be better. The helmet worn all over the NHL should probably sit near the top.
Then you put the NHL equipment list beside the independent lab results.
GearGeek’s NHL equipment database (opens in a new tab) had helmet entries for 770 skaters when we checked it. The five most common model labels accounted for 555 of them—about 72 percent. Virginia Tech’s current adult hockey list contained 75 tested retail helmets.
None of those five popular NHL labels matched a five-star retail model in the Virginia Tech table.
The useful point is narrow: NHL popularity and independent impact performance answer different questions. The rating belongs to the retail sample Virginia Tech tested, not automatically to every helmet carrying the same model label in the NHL.
The league’s five most common helmet labels
Here is the broad view. The NHL counts are GearGeek’s published model assignments. The stars, scores, and test years come from matching retail models in Virginia Tech’s 2026 adult hockey ratings (opens in a new tab). GearGeek’s “CCM Vector V08” maps to Virginia Tech’s “CCM V08”; the other four use the same model name aside from capitalization and hyphen styling.

A lower STAR score is better within Virginia Tech’s adult hockey test. The test year in the last column is the year the lab tested its sample. It is not the age of a helmet on an NHL player’s head.
The table also cuts through two easy assumptions. The 2014 CCM V08 result is stronger than several newer entries. The two most common NHL labels land three stars and one star, despite their large NHL use. Age, price, visibility in the NHL, and lab performance do not move together neatly.
What ten of the top scorers wear
For a closer look, we started with the NHL’s official 2025–26 points leaders (opens in a new tab). That defines “top 100” here as the 100 highest-scoring skaters in the completed regular season, from Connor McDavid at 138 points through a four-player tie at 57 at the cutoff. We then matched the first ten names to the helmet labels on GearGeek’s public points-leaders page.

Five of the ten matched retail models received four stars. One received three. Four received one. None received five.
This is an equipment snapshot checked on August 17. Player gear changes, and GearGeek warns that pro equipment can differ from retail. Every Virginia Tech result here stays attached to the lab’s retail sample.
McDavid and MacKinnon are listed in a V08, a model name that has been around for years; its retail match earned four stars. Celebrini is listed in the much newer-looking Super Tacks X; its retail match earned one. A modern shell does not reveal its lab result from across the rink.
What Virginia Tech is actually measuring
Virginia Tech’s rating is more than a drop test and more specific than a general promise that one helmet is “safe.”
The lab puts each adult model through 48 impacts. It tests the front, top, side, and back at low, medium, and high energies, measuring both linear and rotational acceleration. Those measurements feed a concussion-risk model, with extra weight given to impacts at concussive severities. The contributions are added into one STAR score.
Lower score, better result. The stars make that score easier to read.
The published Hockey STAR method (opens in a new tab) also shows where the comparison has boundaries. The adult protocol uses a medium headform representing a 50th-percentile male. Its exposure weights come from collegiate hockey, and its concussion-risk function was developed from football data. Virginia Tech updated the exposure weighting and star thresholds in 2021, which is why we used the current table rather than old screenshots or launch-day reviews.
For a consumer choosing among adult helmets, the method provides a rare independent comparison that includes rotational motion as well as straight-line acceleration.
STAR compares retail samples under one defined impact set; an individual player’s concussion risk depends on much more.
Virginia Tech is equally clear that even the best head protection cannot remove every head-injury risk. The CDC makes the same point (opens in a new tab): there is no concussion-proof helmet.
So why does the NHL rack look so different?
GearGeek records equipment assignments. Players’ conversations with equipment managers, teams, and brands remain private.
We can see several reasons the two lists should not line up perfectly.
The NHL has its own approval rule
NHL Rule 9.6 (opens in a new tab) requires players to wear a helmet whose design, material, and construction are approved by the League. It does not require a five-star Virginia Tech result or rank approved helmets by STAR score.
Consumer certification is another layer. Hockey Canada requires CSA-certified helmets in its games. HECC advises American consumers to look for a current certification sticker where their league requires it. HECC’s testing programme (opens in a new tab) checks minimum performance criteria such as coverage, retention, and shock absorption.
Virginia Tech describes its ratings (opens in a new tab) as comparative information for consumers, separate from certification, and warns that no helmet can prevent every head injury. Certification, NHL approval, and Virginia Tech’s comparison are three separate systems. A one-star result speaks only to the last one.
The label may not describe every pro detail
GearGeek explicitly notes that professional equipment may include modifications unavailable at retail. The exact construction and any pro modifications are unknown from the public label.
That is why the tables say “retail match.” Without inspecting and testing a player’s helmet, the retail result stays attached to the retail sample.
Fit has to work on a real head
The rating starts after the helmet is fitted to a standard headform. A shopper starts with their own head.
Hockey Canada’s fitting guidance (opens in a new tab) says the helmet should sit one or two fingers above the eyebrows, with the chin cup touching comfortably and the strap snug enough to prevent wobbling. Health Canada (opens in a new tab) likewise tells hockey players to use a CSA-approved helmet, fit it snugly, and check its condition. The CDC calls for a snug fit with no spaces between the pads and the head.
Head shape differs, and models fit differently. A strong lab rating is valuable once a helmet fits correctly, stays in place, works with the required face protection, and meets the player’s league rules.
Why older model names stay around
Four players in the top-ten table are listed in models Virginia Tech tested in 2014 or 2016. Those dates belong to Virginia Tech’s retail samples. A player’s physical helmet may be much newer.
Familiarity, comfort, vision, brand arrangements, and equipment-room availability could all matter in pro hockey. These are hypotheses, not explanations for any player in the table. The public data gives us no basis for assigning an individual motive.
How this should change a helmet purchase
NHL usage is interesting. It is also a shaky shortcut for a family buying a helmet.
Start with the rules and the player. Confirm the required certification for the league, use the correct adult or youth rating table (opens in a new tab), and try the helmet on with the face protection that will actually be worn. The shell should sit level, the padding should make snug contact, and the helmet should stay put without creating painful pressure.
Check the required certification label and, where relevant, its expiry date. Cracks or dents, damaged hardware or straps, missing liner pieces, and a poor fit take the helmet out of the comparison before stars enter the conversation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for adjustment, compatibility, care, and replacement; there is no honest universal replacement interval for every hockey helmet.
Once two or three helmets pass those checks, the Virginia Tech table becomes genuinely useful. Virginia Tech encourages consumers to choose a four- or five-star model among the helmets that fit and meet their rules. Compare the exact model and the appropriate age category. More stars indicate better performance in the lab’s impact set; within a star band, the lower STAR score performed better. Test year and test-time price give context, but neither is a safety ranking by itself.
The NHL rack can tell you what elite players are willing to wear. The lab tells you how retail samples handled a repeatable set of impacts. A good buying decision has room for both pieces of information, with fit, certification, condition, and independent performance doing the serious work.
